Wedding flowers are one of the most important elements of your big day. Not only do they provide color and scent, but they symbolize life, growth, and rebirth.
Beautiful wedding flowers are always conversation starters. After the food and dress, the flowers are one of the things guests will remember most.
Begin and end a wedding beautifully, with your favorite flowers showcased in creative ways. Before you make any flower decisions, consider what is in season. They are at their best and least expensive.
Bride
Your bouquet is your most important accessory. The bridal bouquet should complement the personal style of the bride as well as the overall theme and atmosphere of the wedding. A ‘traditional’ bridal bouquet is designed with all white flowers so that it does not draw attention away from the bride and her wedding gown. However, there is an increasing trend toward adding color to the bridal bouquet from soft pinks and pastels to fuchsia and ruby reds. So, if hot pink suits your personality…there should be nothing stopping you!
Bridesmaids
Bridesmaids’ flowers are traditionally smaller, less complicated versions of the bride’s bouquet. The bridesmaids’ bouquets are a perfect place to introduce different colors into the overall color scheme
Boutonniere
The groom, best man, ushers, and fathers of the bride and groom usually have a simple boutonniere for their jackets. Boutonnieres (usually a single flower, sometimes two) should compliment the bridal bouquet and be worn on the left lapel. Many times a flower in the bride’s bouquet is also used for the groom’s boutonniere. The most popular flower used for boutonnieres are roses. Other flowers that can be used include small orchids, stephanotis, or freesia.
Corsages
Corsages are meant to designate special family members. You may also give corsages to special friends or those participating in your wedding ceremony such as readers, a soloist, or musician. Corsages can be worn in many different ways. They can be pinned to the dress, attached to a purse, or worn around the wrist. A great alternative to the corsage (and cost effective too) is a posie. A posie is a hand held flower or small bouquet. They look great in wedding pictures and when the mothers are escorted down the aisle.
Ceremony
If your ceremony is in a traditional church, you can make the most of the very grand and beautiful architecture by opting for a few carefully chosen arrangements to create a finishing touch. There should be an arrangement in the entrance to welcome guests. Pew ends or chairs look wonderful decorated with posies of flowers. Depending on the scale of the site, large urns can be filled with seasonal flowers.
At the reception, flowers should be bold and noticeable. The key for planning your reception is to work your ideas into the site selected. Whatever style of reception you choose, the tables must be attractive and welcoming. Place striking centerpieces on the reception tables as guests will sit in front of these for several hours. The wedding cake table, buffets, and bars should also be decorated with flowers.
Cake
Many brides coordinate their florist with their caterer and cake baker to provide floral decorations for their cake and buffet table. You may like to have flowers on your cake knife, goblets, or serving plates. Adding this type of floral detail can truly make a difference to the appearance and festive atmosphere of your reception.
My goal is to inspire you with timeless ideas to help you create an event that is unforgettable. So, no matter what your budget is, I hope you realize the important role flowers play in the wedding ceremony and consider your options.
